PRoject overview
RIT myCourses Redesign is a UX redesign of Rochester Institute of Technology's learning management system. The project focused on simplifying academic workflows, improving navigation, and reducing the cognitive load students experience when managing courses, assignments, and deadlines.
the problem
Students struggle with an outdated learning platform where confusing navigation and fragmented workflows make everyday academic tasks slower and more frustrating.
the challenge
How might we redesign the learning experience to help students find information faster, manage coursework more efficiently, and complete common tasks with less cognitive effort?
The challenge was improving usability while preserving the core functionality students and instructors rely on throughout the semester.
results & impact
Redesigned key areas of the myCourses experience to create a more intuitive and student-centered learning platform.
Key improvements included:
Simplified navigation and information architecture to reduce the number of steps required for tasks.
Redesigned to prioritize deadlines, announcements, and frequently accessed resources.
Improved assignment submission workflows with clearer visual hierarchy and progress indicators.
Created a consistent design system to improve usability and interface consistency across the platform.
The redesign demonstrates how thoughtful UX decisions can reduce friction and improve the overall learning experience without changing the platform's core functionality.
LEARNINGs
This project reinforced the importance of designing around users' daily habits rather than simply improving visual aesthetics.
Most importantly, I learned that successful redesigns are driven by a deep understanding of user pain points and careful prioritization—not by adding more features, but by making existing experiences clearer, faster, and easier to use.
